Report: Phillies Turned Down Deal to Add White Sox lefty Garrett Crochet at the Deadline
As the 2024 Major League Baseball regular season winds down, the Phillies will get one of the two National League byes and will start their playoff journey in the Division Series on Saturday, Oct. 5.
They made two deals at the trade deadline, one to add bullpen help, with closer Carlos Estevez coming over from Anaheim and outfielder Austin Hays coming over from Baltimore.
Estevez has pitched in 20 games with the Phillies, closing out six games with a 2.57 ERA and a 1.19 WHIP. Hays just returned from the injured list with a kidney infection and is hitting .240 with one home run and five RBI in 21 games since coming over in a trade from Baltimore.
However, did they need to add another starting pitcher at the deadline? Time will tell, but one was available that the Phillies turned down. Chicago was on the table at the deadline, according to Jesse Rogers of ESPN, the Phillies turned down the opportunity to land him in exchange for a package that included top-pitching prospect Andrew Painter.
The Phillies turned down the White Sox's request for top pitching prospect Andrew Painter as part of the package
In 31 games this season, Crochet is 6-12 with a 3.78 ERA and 1.06 WHIP on the season, pitching for one of the worst teams in Major League Baseball history. One thing Crochet does is strike hitters out, racking up 203 strikeouts in just 142 innings pitched.
Painter is coming back from Tommy John Surgery and has started to throw, and could be a factor in the team's 2025 rotation and plans. The 21-year-old reportedly hit 99 mph during a recent throwing session and is expected to compete for a role at spring training.
So Phillies fans, should the Phillies have pulled the trigger on the deal and landed Crochet for Painter?
