Phillies Reportedly Extend Contract of Manager Rob Thomson
Phillies manager Rob Thomson took the helm of the club in June of 2022 after manager Joe Girardi was let go. The Phillies surged into the playoffs and all the way to the World Series. In the subsequent three seasons, the Phillies were eliminated from the playoffs and failed to return to the World Series, including two straight Division Series losses. Despite this, the Phillies are extending confidence - and the contract - of their skipper.
Scott Lauber of the Philadelphia Inquirer reports that the Phillies have agreed to a one-year contract extension with Thomson.
The move means that Thomson is under contract through 2027. That means Thomson can go into 2026 not as a "lame duck," but with job security. It is commonly thought that a manager will perform better if not worrying about his contract status.
The move comes as the Phillies are close to bringing aboard veteran manager and coach Don Mattingly to serve as bench coach. Mattingly would replace Mike Calitri, who will move into the major league field coordinator role. Calitri served as quality assurance coach prior to being elivated to bench coach upon Thomson's promotion in 2022.
The timing might not be a coincidence; the Phillies can show that the Mattingly hire is not meant as a threat to Thomson's job security, as one might infer from the hire. Mattingly was a major league manager for five seasons with the Los Angeles Dodgers and seven seasons with the Miami Marlins, compiling a 889-950 record.
Thomson, since taking over the Phillies in 2022, is 597-346. At .580, Thomson has the highest winning percentage of any Phillies manager who managed more than 35 games.
