The South Jersey Sports Report
Standings – With just a week to go before the playoff deadline, the races are heating up. Middle Twonship beats Spirit then loses to Bridgeton and Mainland. Spirit loses to Middle then goes to Richland and knocks off the Hermits. Keep an eye out for the big battle as Pleasantville (seven wins in a row) travels to Wildwood Catholic (nine straight victories) for a huge match-up on Friday against the Crusaders. Both have winning streaks on the line and will be very dangerous in the playoffs. Spirit girls take on Atlantic City in Absecon on Monday for a big re-match. Holy Spirit gave AC their only conference loss earlier this season.
It’s all Relative– Coincidence? Holy Spirit’s Gina Lewis and Sacred Heart’s Kennedy Johnson are cousins and the way they’ve been dominating on the glass has been impressive. Lewis has 5 games in her last six with double digit rebounding numbers, including a 17 board performance against Bridgeton last week. Johnson has been a double/double machine since she became eligible this month.
Milestones – Congratulations to Ocean City High School coach John Bruno on his 300th win at the helm of the Red Raiders. All coaches that reach milestones rarely talk about nothing but the good players they’ve had to get to this point, but Bruno is one of the best and nicest coaches you’ll fine. Don’t let the tough veneer fool you on the sidelines. He truly cares about his players, school and students. The Cape-Atlantic League has some very good coaches that have been in the League for years, they know how to motivate and get the best out of the players. Take a look around and see how many coaches on the boys and girls side have been at their schools for years. It’s an impressive list .
