Vic Fangio Shares Update on Injured Eagles Edge Rusher Jonathan Greenard

The Philadelphia Eagles have yet to see anything from edge rusher Jonathan Greenard, who has been sidelined with a pectoral injury he suffered while lifting weights, and it doesn't seem like they will anytime soon.

Vic Fangio’s Update on Jonathan Greenard’s Timeline

"We aren't going to see him for another couple of weeks at least," Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio admitted on Tuesday.

The team traded two third-round picks to the Vikings for Greenard and then agreed to a four-year, $100 million extension with $50 million in guarantees through 2029.

While he hasn't been on the field, he has done as much as he can to integrate himself into the Eagles' defense off the field.

Off-the-Field Leadership During Training Camp

"He's been great behind the scenes," Fangio explained. He's into practice, he's into the meetings, he's doing everything he can to stay up and be prepared as much as he can without doing anything physically. He's been great that way."

Greenard, 28, was acquired to apply pressure and get to the quarterback, racking up 24.5 sacks in two seasons, before an injury limited him to just 38 tackles, three sacks, and 10 TFLs in 12 games last year.

Preparing for the Physical Toll of an NFL Return

However, as Fangio pointed out, there will be an adjustment when he does, in fact, return to the field.

"When he does come back, whenever that is, the thing you miss by not partaking in training camp, which he probably won't, you've got to get calloused to play in NFL football -- the banging, the running, the change of direction, the fatigue of it," Fangio said.

Next Men Up: How Nolan Smith and Arnold Ebiketie Benefit

Without Greenard, the Eagles have a pair of third-year players, Nolan Smith and Jalyx Hunt, along with free-agent additions Arnold Ebiketie and A.J. Epenesa, adding depth.

Fangio commented last week that Ebiketie was one of the guys taking advantage of Greenard being out.

"Him (Ebiketie) and some of the other guys are taking advantage of the reps they're gaining with OLB Jonathan Greenard being out for a while," Fangio stated.
