Right-handed pitcher Aaron Nola will start Game 3 of the National League Division Series on Wednesday night against the Los Angeles Dodgers when the series shifts to Hollywood.

Phillies manager Rob Thomson made the announcement during a pregame press conference after Game 2 on Monday.

Many thought Ranger Suárez would be the Game 3 starter ever since the Phillies announced they were going with Cristopher Sánchez in Game 1 and Jesus Luzardo in Game 2, but it will be the veteran Nola who will get the ball with the season on the line.

Rob Thomson Explains the Decision

"I just trust him," Thomson said.

Thomson said Suarez will back Nola up.   When asked why Nola will get the ball over Suarez, Thomson said Nola has never pitched out of the bullpen.

Thomson added there is nothing health related with Suarez, who has been available to pitch out of the bullpen in the first two games, but hasn't appeared in this series.

Nola’s 2025 Season by the Numbers

Nola posted a 3.44 ERA in 17 starts this year, recording 97 strikeouts and 28 walks over 94.1 innings. He landed on the injured list with a ankle injury in mid May, but returned in mid-August and made every start the rest of the way.

Nola finished on a strong note, allowing just one run on two hits, striking out nine in eight innings in a win over the Twins

First pitch for Game 3 is set for 9:07 p.m. ET from Dodger Stadium, listen on 97.3 ESPN and the free mobile app.
