CAL Fine 5 – A New Team Enters the Fine 5, Hermits at Top
The St. Augustine Prep football team kept rolling with a 27-3 win over Mainland, keeping the top spot in our weekly list of the Cape-Atlantic League version of the Fine 5 – a list of the five best teams in the CAL.
We’ll post some of the top performances and teams and give you games to watch moving forward each week – so here is this week’s ‘CAL Fine 5′.
1. St. Augustine Prep Hermits (5-0) - Last week No. 1: The Prep is a perfect 5-0 and is on top in the Cape-Atlantic League American Conference. They now have their sights set on earning a home game in the Non-Public IV playoffs next month Next: vs Absegami (2-2)
2. St. Joseph Wildcats (3-2) - Last week No. 2: The Wildcats were knocked off by Maryland power Mount St. Joseph, losing 29-0 on Saturday. It's the first time the Wildcats have been shutout since 2008, but they still are a very dangerous team especially locally in the CAL American conference. Next: vs Atlantic City (1-3)
3. Cedar Creek Pirates (3-1) - Last week No. 3: The Pirates had a bye this week, so they still are looking to get past their 12-6 overtime loss to Bridgeton. They are still one of the most explosive teams in the area, and in group II with some of the best talent in the area on offense with Bo Melton, Ahmir Mitchell and quarterback Jesse Milza. Next: at Oakcrest (3-1)
4. Buena Chiefs (4-1) - Last week No. 4: The Chiefs rebounded after a tough loss at home to Cedar Creek by beating Oakcrest 19-13 in overtime and now by knocking off Holy Spirit 47-21. They Chiefs are a veteran team who has some really good talent on offense with Sammy Crouch, Quadir Albright and quarterback Tyler Rainer leading the way. Next: at Mainland (2-2) - on 97.3 ESPN
5. Millville Thunder-Bolts (2-2) - Last week NR: The Thunder-Bolts evened their record at 2-2 with a impressive win over Absegami on Friday night, knocking off the Braves 22-6. Their only two losses have come to St. Augustine and St. Joe's - a game they lost in overtime. This is a dangerous team, and could make some noise in the Group V playoff race. Next: vs. Ocean City (1-4) on 1450-AM
