Council, Dowtin lead charge as Sixers put Spurs away in Las Vegas
Ricky Council IV and Jeff Dowtin Jr. led the way for the Sixers, who buried the San Antonio Spurs in the fourth quarter to seal a 96-80 victory in Las Vegas Summer League play on Friday.
Here's what I saw.

- Every once in a while, you'll see a play that - whether simple or complex - will romanticize the "team-game" nature of basketball. Look no further than Adem Bona for a moment highlighting that. He couldn't secure the ball after a teammate's shot popped off the glass in the first half, but his effort to extend his arms and inject himself into the play by any means gave the ball enough life on the long ricochet that another Sixer was able to corral the miss and create an additional play for Philadelphia.
- Really good to see Jared McCain lace a three after flaring to the strong-side corner off a high entry. He has to keep trusting his shot, and the looks coming off quick movements will only become easier with repetitions.
- I would like to see a comparison of Council IV's speed when he knows he's about to get a highlight dunk in transition to his speed when that opportunity doesn't register in his mind. Not only is he wildly athletic in the air, but he can turn on the jets when he wants to, too.
- Side note on Council - my vision is 20/20 and I know a pick-and-roll when I see one; he is getting more reps as a decision-maker in the action, and he's getting more comfortable with making plays as a ball-handler in tighter spaces.
- 13 points for Dowtin in the fourth quarter to put the game away. He was cooking in the midrange right above the foul line. I do feel for him; how much longer does he have to live on minimums, two-ways, and summer league tryouts before someone gives him a chance to stick on a bench? It might not be in Philadelphia with Tyrese Maxey, Kyle Lowry, and now Jared McCain all filling up the guard depth. But, Dowtin is clearly a tier above the field in these summer league environments.

- In addition to some of the robotic movements in his game, one of the things Bona will have to work on as he matures in the NBA is managing the risk that comes with trying to block every shot. The pogo sticks in his legs and his timing on plays at the rim make chasing blocks a prospect yielding rather easy reward for Bona. But, there will be times when he gets caught backpedaling against a smaller player attacking downhill. Defending the basket as you urgently reverse course becomes more difficult when the ball-handler is zigging and zagging to get you off balance.
Not only does chasing blocks put Bona at risk of fouling, but constantly pursuing the rejection also takes the theoretical biggest Sixer on the court away from rebounding position. Bona is athletic and energetic enough to have plays where he can both go for the block and recover for the rebound. But, that won't happen as often when the competition is more consistent in real NBA games.
The Sixers finished their Las Vegas scheduled with a 3-1 record. Playoffs will begin on Sunday. It is not yet known who Philadelphia will face.
