PHILADELPHIA (973espn.com) - The Eagles have lost second-year defensive end Derek Barnett for the season, according to ESPN.

Moments after Jim Schwartz stepped away from the podium on Tuesday Adam Schefter reported that the 2017 first-round pick needs surgery and will be out of the mix on the defensive front.

Barnett missed the loss to Minnesota in Week 5 after injuring the shoulder, believed to be a torn rotator cuff, against Tennessee the week prior but returned to play against the New York Giants and Carolina, recording two tackles in 31 snaps against the Giants and another two tackles -- including one for a loss -- in 37 reps against the Panthers.

Overall, Barnett will finish the season with 19 tackles and 2 1/2 sacks, the latter number third on the team behind Fletcher Cox (4) and Michael Bennett (3).

The Eagles had been using a rotation of Brandon Graham, Barnett, Bennett and Chris Long at defensive end.

There are likely two paths forward now with Schwartz either moving forward with rookie fourth-round pick Josh Sweat in the end rotation in place of Barnett or Bennett limiting his work inside in favor of Graham with Long playing more at left end.

Of the 101 edge players graded by ProFootballFocus.com this season Barnett is currently No. 52, behind Graham (No. 4), Bennett (14th) and Long (22nd) on what was undoubtedly the deepest position on the team.

Eagles Bring Back Pumphrey to PS

It's not exactly the move Eagles fans were waiting for but Donnel Pumphrey is about to get another opportunity in Philadelphia.

The Eagles re-signed the 2017 fourth-round pick to the practice squad on Tuesday. Pumphrey, 23, made the team's 53-man roster as a rookie but was ultimately redshirted and placed on injured reserve with a hamstring issue.

At just 5-foot-8 and 180 pounds Pumphrey was told to add weight and get stronger in the offseason and the early results were somewhat promising until another hamstring problem derailed his preseason and foreshadowed his ultimate release.

Pumphrey caught on for a bit with Detroit's practice squad before being released there and recently tried out for the New York Jets.

He rejoins a RB room which includes Wendell Smallwood, Corey Clement, undrafted rookie Josh Adams, and the injured Darren Sproles, who has been out with his own hamstring injury since Week 1.

The team's lead back -- Jay Ajayi -- is out for the season with a torn ACL.
