Eagles Super Bowl Champion To Be Honorary Captain Thursday Night
As the Philadelphia Eagles prepare for a showdown for the NFC East Division lead on Thursday Night, there is plenty of nostalgia for Eagles fans who are looking forward to a game with the Washington Commanders that has major ramifications.
Washington has not been a contender for the NFC East since 2020, which also happens to be the last season the Eagles had a losing record. The last time both Philadelphia and their division rivals located in the DMV area both finished a season with winning records was 1996.
Earlier this season when the Eagles played on Monday Night Football in NFL Week 2, Philadelphia honored Super Bowl MVP Nick Foles. One of Foles' teammates from the 2017 Eagles team that won that championship will be honored this Thursday Night.
This Former Eagles Defensive Player Will Be Honored At Lincoln Financial Field
The Honorary Captain for the Eagles on Thursday Night Football played eight seasons in Philadelphia, playing 111 games in Eagles' Green.
Vinny Curry was the 59th overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft. The Defensive End who played College Football at Marshall is originally from Neptune, New Jersey, and was already familiar with football in the Northeast when he came to Philadelphia.
Curry compiled 30 Sacks and 126 Solo Tackles during his time playing for Philadelphia. He has the 5th Most Quarterback Hits in Eagles Franchise History (85).
Eagles Owner Jeffrey Lurie gave the following statement in a press release about Vinny Curry retiring as an Eagles player and serving as Honorary Captain on Thursday Night:
“Vinny Curry’s contributions were always on display, and it was his role on our Super Bowl-winning team that defined his legacy. Vinny’s genuine love and passion for the Eagles growing up allowed him to connect so easily with our team and city. His commitment over eight seasons, along with everything he gave to his teammates and coaches on the field, was truly authentic and always came from the heart. We are thrilled to celebrate this special occasion with Vinny and his family on Thursday night at Lincoln Financial Field.”
There is some fun Eagles Trivia about how Curry would end up being drafted by Philadelphia.:
In July 2011, the Eagles traded Quarterback Kevin Kolb to the Arizona Cardinals for Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and a 2012 Second Round Draft Pick. That Draft Asset (the 51st Overall pick( would be traded to the Green Bay Packers during the 2012 NFL Draft for the 59th Overall Pick (Curry) and the 123rd Overall Pick (Brandon Boykin).
