Eagles Fielding Trade Calls for Jalen Carter Amid Free Agency Frenzy
With the start of the new NFL league year officially opening on Wednesday, the legal tampering period begins on Monday, and you can expect to hear plenty of names either returning or changing teams.
Maxx Crosby has already been traded from Las Vegas to Baltimore, and AJ Brown's name has constantly been mentioned in trade talks.
So could another Eagles player be dealt to try to improve a roster that was bounced in a Wild Card round loss at home to an undermanned 49ers team?
The Jalen Carter Trade Rumors: Fact or Fiction?
According to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler in his most recent free agency buzz column, he notes that the team has received calls on defensive tackle Jalen Carter.
With defensive tackle Jordan Davisnow extended, Philly also must weigh whether to extend Jalen Carter, who is eligible for a new deal. I'm told Philly has received trade calls on Carter.
The team has already inked fellow defensive tackle Jordan Davis to a new three-year, $78 million extension that will keep him in Philadelphia through the 2029 season.
Priorities in the Pass Rush: Retaining Jaelan Phillips
While trading Carter seems to be a long shot, retaining Jaelan Phillips looks like a priority. According to ESPN’s Tim McManus, the “expectation” is that the Eagles will make a push to re-sign Phillips, which is also backed up by Fowler.
People inside the league believe Philly is attempting to re-sign Phillips to a deal that would pay him well above $20 million per year. But Phillips will have a strong market if he chooses to enter free agency.
The Contingency Plan: Targeting Jonathan Greenard
If the team is unable to bring Phillips back, Fowler mentions Vikings edge rusher Jonathan Greenard, who could be obtained for a Day 2 pick and a likely contract extension when he arrives at his new team.
As a contingency, the Eagles are believed to have inquired about Minnesota's Jonathan Greenard. The Vikings have received many inquiries on Greenard, who will be far cheaper to acquire than Crosby. A Day 2 pick probably gets a deal done. But complicating matters is Greenard's contract. Teams say he wants a new deal.
Greenard's season ended with a shoulder injury that limited him to just three sacks after back-to-back double-digit sack seasons with Minnesota (12) and Houston (12.5).
March Madness has begun in college basketball; it's about to get started for NFL teams.
