Eagles Trade for WR John Metchie in Deal with Texans
The Philadelphia Eagles have given Jalen Hurts another weapon.
The team traded for former Houston Texans wide receiver John Metchie III, who was a second-round pick in 2022 out of Alabama.
Trade Details
John Metchie’s NFL Journey So Far
The former Texan missed his entire rookie season with acute promyelocytic leukemia, but has 40 catches for 414 yards and one score in 29 total games. He has appeared in two playoff games with nine catches for 107 yards for Houston.
Where Metchie Fits in the Eagles’ WR Room
Metchie joins a wide receiver room that features AJ Brown, DeVonta Smith, Jahan Dotson, Ainias Smith, and Johnny Wilson.
It will be interesting to see where Metchie fits in with the Eagles, who have Brown and Sith at the top of the depth chart with Dotson the clear No. 3. After those three, he could compete with Smith, Wilson, and even Terrace Marshall.
The move could indicate that the team has at least some level of concern about Brown's hamstring injury.
He was a big-time playmaker and teammate of DeVonta Smith at Alabama, which made him the 44th pick in the draft, and he was a player the Eagles liked in the 2022 draft.
It will be surprising to see Metchie making a significant impact. Remember, the Eagles traded for Dotson before the start of the 2024 season, but he made minimal impact last season as the team's No. 3 wideout last season.
Moving Bryant, who signed a one-year, $2 million contract in the offseason, was a sign he wasn't going to make the team. He was behind the tight end battle with Kylen Granson for the No. 3 role behind Dallas Goedert and Grant Calcaterra.
