Proposed Eagles Trade: Trey Hendrickson to Philadelphia?
The Philadelphia Eagles made three deals over the past week as the deadline to set their 53-man roster approaches.
All NFL teams must cut down to 53 players by Tuesday at 4 p.m.
Eagles’ Recent Roster Moves Before the Deadline
During training camp, the team has improved its roster by adding cornerback Jakorian Bennett, wide receiver John Metchie III, quarterback Sam Howell, and bringing back veteran swing tackle Fred Johnson, but evaluators aren't sure the team is done making moves.
Over at ESPN.com, veteran NFL writer Bill Barnwell writes about 10 trades he'd like to see happen before the Eagles and Cowboys kick off the season on September 4.
One of them includes a deal between the Eagles and Cincinnati for star pass rusher Trey Hendrickson, who is seeking a new deal from the Bengals.
Bill Barnwell’s Proposed Eagles Trade
- Bengals get: Edge Jalyx Hunt, 2026 third-round pick, 2027 conditional pick
- Eagles get: Edge Trey Hendrickson
If the Eagles, or any team, were to make a deal involving Hendrickson will also have to have room to sign Hendrickson to a new deal.
Could the Eagles afford Hendrickson?
If they want to get creative, sure. He might need to compromise a bit to get a deal done, but the Eagles could give him a contract with what amounts to two years and $70 million in guarantees with some void years and unguaranteed money tacked on to create cap flexibility. They have just under $30 million in cap space available, so while they'll want to roll some of that money over to next season, room under the cap isn't really an issue.
Trey Hendrickson’s Career Production and Impact
The 30-year-old pass rusher would give the Eagles a star at the position, while giving up a potential star in Hunt. Hendrickson totaled a league-leading 18 sacks and 50 quarterback hurries in 2024, while Hunt came on strong during the Eagles' playoff run and Super Bowl victory.
Overall, he has 77 sacks in 110 career games, adding 155 QB hurries.
Playing Hendrickson next to a player like Jalen Carter would be a nightmare situation for opposing offenses.
What the Eagles Would Give Up
As for Hunt, the 2024 third-round pick surprised many when he stepped in for an injured Brandon Graham last season. He totalled 1.5 sacks and 17 tackles during the regular season, and added another 1.5 sacks and nine tackles during the Eagles ' four-game postseason run.
Hunt would be an affordable addition at a position of need for the next several years. Bengals fans wouldn't be excited about getting a Day 3 pick from a team that expects to compete for a title, but Cincinnati doesn't have a ton of negotiating leverage, especially if it doesn't want to eat any money as part of a trade.
