Former Eagles head coach Dick Vermeil is one of the finalist for the Pro Football Hall of Fame class of 2022 the Hall of Fame announced on Tuesday.

Vermeil released a statement to the Hall of Fame saying, “I am overwhelmed. I’m not sure I belong there.”

Vermeil, 84, was hired to be the Eagles' head coach in 1976, leading them to the Super Bowl in 1980. He abruptly retired after the 1982 season, citing burnout, before heading back to the NFL sidelines with the Rams in 1997, leading them to a Super Bowl in 1999.

Vermeil walked away again, but returned with the Chiefs before retiring for good.

He retired with a 120-109 record  in 15 years as an NFL head coach.

The group of 25 finalists will be reduced to 15 in January, and the class of 2021 will be chosen on the eve of the Super Bowl.
