6ABC/Philadelphia meteorologist teases ‘huge’ career announcement
FRIDAY MORNING UPDATE: Chris Sowers has made his "huge" career announcement — click here to find out what it is.
Our original report continues below.
If there's one thing people in and around Philadelphia don't like, it's changes at Channel 6 and Action News.
And, of course, that's for good reason -- 6ABC has had the top-rated newscasts in the city for decades. Jim Gardner, Jim O'Brien, Dave Roberts, and Gary Papa, are just as well-known and legendary in Philly as Taylor Swift or Brad Pitt are around the world.
Slow changes at Channel 6 seem to be OK; it's those unexpected left turns that send people into a tizzy.
Case in point, every man, woman, and child knows the Action News theme song -- "Move Closer to Your World" by Al Ham. He's the same guy who played a big part in the song "I’d Like to Teach the World to Sing" which Coca-Cola changed a bit and used back in the 70s.
Anyway, Channel 6 has used "Move Closer" since 1972. In 1996, the station decided to have the London Philharmonic perform an updated version of that song and they received such a negative reaction from the public that it was gone in a matter of days. It hasn't changed since.
Sidenote: "Move Closer" is actually a full-length song -- have you ever heard the entire thing?
More recently, sports anchor Jamie Apody disappeared from Channel 6 and people lost their collective minds. Just a few months ago, she resurfaced on FOX 29.
WPVI weather guy teases 'huge' career announcement soon
On Wednesday, 6ABC meteorologist Chris Sowers took to Facebook and posted the following very simple message:
I have huge career news coming! I’ll be making an announcement soon.
And, as expected, social media went nuts.
In under 24 hours, over 1,600 comments were posted, many wondering exactly what one of the top meteorologists in the city is up to.
So is Sowers leaving? Is he getting a prime-time shift? Is he just being playful and we're all falling for a tease — is he getting ready to ride a "huge" rollercoaster for a segment on Action News?
He's been with the station since 2011 (and he even worked there for a bit before that). He's incredibly active on social media platforms and has built a tremendous following. I'd score the chances of him leaving 'PVI as incredibly low to almost zero.
So, what is he up to?

At this point, your guess is as good as mine. As the old TV cliche goes, "Stay tuned..."
