Another Store Closing at Hamilton Mall in NJ, ‘Saddest mall in America’
Another store at what has been dubbed the "saddest mall in America" appears to be shutting down.
Hamilton Mall Labeled "Saddest Mall in America"
That mall would be Hamilton Mall in Mays Landing and that label was recently given to it by both us and a TikTok video, which spread across the digital landscape pretty rapidly.
The store in question is one of the largest that's currently operating at the mall (for now) and it's just one of countless stores that have fled the withering retail center over the past few years.
Recent Store Closures at Hamilton Mall
If you've lost count of the stores that have recently closed, here's a quick recap.
August: Bob's Discount Furniture announced it was leaving the strip of stores behind the mall and moving across the street to be near Target. The new Bob's is scheduled to open sometime around New Year's Day.
August: Claire's, the chain known for ear piercings, jewelry, and hair accessories, closed its Hamilton Mall store (and many others) as it works through a bankruptcy filing.
July: Bath & Body Works closed and it, too, moved across the street to Consumer Square by Target.
June: Crab du Jour, right by one of the mall's main entrances, closed...
...although, by the looks of it, it wasn't an amicable departure.
And that's just the past few months. If we were to go back to when the dominoes began to fall for the mall, we would have to start in the fall of 2018 when Sears closed, followed by JCPenney the next year.
Home Living Furniture & Mattresses Closing
And it's that JCPenney space (or at least the lower half of it) that involves the latest Hamilton Mall store that is closing: Home Living Furniture & Mattresses.
We wrote a story just before Memorial Day 2024 that Home Living would be opening soon. Not even a year and a half later, they're doing just the opposite.
Those who follow the comings and goings of Hamilton Mall stores might remember that after JCPenney left, Shoppers World moved into the first floor of that massive store, but they, too, departed shortly after opening.
Mall Remains Open
As we always do, we must mention that the mall remains open every day, with dozens of businesses operating inside, including some relatively new ones.
And if you haven't been in the mall lately, we took a detailed walk through it last month. Some of the sights are pretty eye-opening.
