Salem County Man Sentenced After DUI Stop on AC Expressway
Mays Landing, N.J. — A Salem County man who was arrested for driving while intoxicated on the Atlantic City Expressway while having a loaded handgun has been sentenced to eight years in state prison.
36-year-old Akeem Statin of Penns Grove must serve five years before becoming eligible for parole.
On April 21st, he pleaded guilty to second-degree unlawful possession of a handgun and second-degree certain persons not to possess a firearm, a charge that reflects a prior conviction that bars him from owning or possessing any firearms.
Pulled Over at 100 MPH
According to the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office, on October 27, 2023, New Jersey State Police received reports of an erratic driver on the Atlantic City Expressway who was going more than 100 MPH and swerving in traffic.
Troopers pulled Statin over, and they noticed signs of intoxication. He told troopers he had consumed "a couple of drinks and a couple of shots" before getting behind the wheel.
After arresting him for DUI, troopers searched the vehicle and found a loaded handgun in the center console.
