Jalen Hurts Discusses the Eagles QB Situation

Though he gave the Eagles a bit of a spark and played well enough to help the Eagles upset the New Orleans Saints, Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts knows nothing will be handed to him, because nothing ever has.

"It's always been a business, in the college and pros," acknowledged Hurts during an appearance on CBS Sports radio. "I've always understood that."

Hurts went 1-3 during his three starts, after replacing Carson Wentz, throwing for six touchdowns, four interceptions and adding three more rushing scores.

"Those four games I got the opportunity to get my feet wet and take off next year," Hurts stated.

And while the offense appeared to be more fluid and perform better with Hurts under center, he showed that he has plenty of growing to do still, completing just 52% of his passes. The team averaged 20 points per game with Hurts engineering the offense and averaged 21 points with Wentz in charge of the team.

"I'm putting the work in on my end," Hurts said. "I'm trying to take the next step. I'm challenging myself to be the best quarterback I can be."

The question is, even his his best is better than Carson Wentz, will he get a fair shake?

Wentz of course has four years and a $132 million cap hit staring the team in the face, making it very difficult to move or sit him, which makes it very difficult to give Hurts a fair shake.

New coach Nick Sirianni has been noncommittal and vague on the issue, stressing that competition will take place at all positions.

"What we need to do is evaluate the entire roster," explained Sirianni. "We have a lot of things to go through in these next couple weeks of evaluating the entire roster in every position: quarterback, wide receiver, defensive back. That is what we're going to be diving into here. It's great."

"We have two quarterbacks in [QB] Carson Wentz and [QB] Jalen Hurts that are top-notch. They're top-notch quarterbacks. A lot of teams don't have any. Just really excited to work with both of them."
