Philadelphia Eagles Legend Bill Bergey Dies at 79
Bill Bergey was considered one of the greatest linebackers to have ever played for the Philadelphia Eagles. The South Dayton, NY native is a member of the Eagles Hall of Fame for his play on the field.
After his exceptional playing days, the Eagles legend became a member of the Eagles Radio Network broadcast team, serving as a color commentator, and later became a part of the pre and post-game shows, died on Wednesday at the age of 79.
His former broadcast partner, Merrill Reese, the longtime voice of the Philadelphia Eagles posted about his passing on social media.
"So sad to learn of the passing of my dear friend Bill Bergey this morning," Reese stated. Number 66 was one of the greatest players of all time. Nobody ever loved his family, friends, and Eagles fans more."
Bergey was one of the more popular players in team history and is considered one of the best players in franchise history.
He played seven seasons in Philadelphia from 1974 to 1980. He was elected to five Pro Bowls and was a two-time First-Team All-Pro and three-time Second-Team All-Pro.
He played in 159 NFL games, making almost 1,200 tackles, 27 interceptions, and recovered 21 fumbles. His last game with the Eagles and in the NFL was Super Bowl XV.
On Christmas Day, it was announced by his son Jake, that Bergey had died from cancer.
