Eagles Offensive Coordinator candidates: Brian Daboll Set to Interview
The Philadelphia Eagles have begun to interview candidates to replace Kevin Patullo as the team's next offensive coordinator.
While lesser-known names had the first chance, the team interviewed the Falcons' offensive coordinator Zac Robinson on Friday. On Sunday, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that the team is expected to interview former New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll for the vacant position.
The Search for a Seventh Play Caller Since 2021
After a disappointing home loss to the 49ers in the Wild Card round, the Eagles are in an all too familiar place following the firing of Patullo, looking for another play caller, its seventh play caller since 2021. Since Jalen Hurts entered the league in 2021, he has engineered offenses run by Doug Pederson, Nick Sirianni, Shane Steichen, Brian Johnson, Kellen Moore, and Patullo.
A look at those being tied to the Philadelphia Eagles’ opening so far:
In addition to Robinson, the team has or will interview Giants interim head coach and former Chiefs offensive coordinator Mike Kafka, who was drafted by the Eagles in 2010.
Former Lions and current Colts coordinator Jim Bob Cooter, who was on the Eagles coaching staff with Sirianni in 2021, and the two coached together in Kansas City during the 2012 season, interviewed for the position on Saturday.
On Sunday, it was reported that the team requested to interview the Dolphins' senior passing game coordinator, Bobby Slowik.
Finally, on Monday morning, it was reported that Tampa Bay offense coordinator Josh Gizzard will interview with the team.High-Profile Candidates: Brian Daboll and Mike McDaniel
Getting back to Daboll, who worked with Hurts at Alabama for one season in 2017 and has worked with Josh Allen, Daniel Jones, and Jaxson Dart. He also worked with Saquon Barkley in New York, leading them to the playoffs during his first season in 2022. Daboll went 20-40-1 during his time with the Giants as a head coach, but could profile as a much better offensive coordinator.
One thing Daboll has been known for is his ability to adapt to the specific strengths of his personnel, particularly his quarterback, using a lot of 11-personnel (1 RB, 1 TE, 3 WR) and using a lot of RPO during his time at Alabama.
Overall, he has spent eight years as a play caller (Cleveland, Kansas City, Miami, and Buffalo) at the NFL level and four seasons as a head coach in New York. Sirianni was Daboll's wide receiver coach when the two coached together in Kansas City.
