For years, the narrative surrounding the Philadelphia Flyers has been one of patience and process. But following a 2025-26 campaign that saw the Orange and Black defy the odds, secure 98 points, and battle through two rounds of postseason hockey, there has been a clear shift in expectations going forward. The fans will demand more, the players can feel that and understand it.

A large theme from breakup day was just that, the understanding that expectations will be raised, and that getting a taste of what the playoffs is all about will serve as motivation.

A "Taste" That Lingers

For many of the younger core players, this spring represented their first look at the intensity of NHL playoff hockey. According to veteran forward Christian Dvorak, that experience has fundamentally altered the team's DNA heading into the summer.

"I think once you get a taste of it, it’s addicting. You want more of it," Dvorak said. "I think it’s only going to help us be even hungrier even during the offseason training and getting ready for next season."

"We were just super excited to be back there," Sean Couturier said. "It’s been a rough couple of years, some ups, some downs, and to finally get rewarded a little bit was definitely nice."

That sentiment was echoed by Travis Sanheim, who emerged as a pillar on the blue line this year. For Sanheim, the postseason wasn't just a bonus. it was a blueprint.

"To be able to take the step from an organizational standpoint that we did this year excites me moving forward and motivates me for the offseason," Sanheim said.

"You realize how tough it is in this league to get that opportunity, I think those guys are just as hungry as I am. Build off of what you've been building off,” Garnet Hathaway said. “I’d probably get the same answer from pretty much everyone. They're probably excited to work for the summer but can't wait to get back already."

Shifting the Momentum

With a 3.8 percent chance to make the playoffs in mid-March, the Flyers defied the odds and went on a run that many felt was impossible. That magic will wear off going forward, as the expectations change with a young group that knows what to expect in critical games down the stretch.

Nick Seeler, who has seen the team through its lowest points over the last five years, believes the "right mix" is finally in place. "I just feel like we have the right mix... guys are hungrier than ever and it was perfect for them to get playoff experience this year," Seeler said. “Guys are going to be hungry next year to get in the playoffs, obviously, but just to be a competitive top team."

"I’m really excited to see what happens here moving forward,” Travis Konecny said. “I can't wait for training camp next year to see these guys flying around."

Higher Expectations Moving Forward

Perhaps the most significant takeaway from the exit interviews was the collective acknowledgment that "just being there" is no longer enough for the city of Philadelphia or the players in the room. As a rebuild continues with a playoff appearance, the expectations change as well.

"It’s going to be harder probably just to do this every year," Couturier said. "That’s kind of the standards we’re setting around here with the young group we have and the potential that we have. We can’t take anything for granted, and we got to push ourselves to the next level. We're pushing ourselves to become top contenders and to get to that level, and I'm sure management is thinking the same way."

"Expectations are going to be more next year than they were this year," Seeler said. "Which is what you want. You want to be playing playoff hockey here. It’s something special."

"You look to next year already and you’ve got to raise the bar again,” Konecny said. “So that would be getting in again and making another run. I feel like we're on the right path."

To do that, going through the process this season can help the team make the most of the opportunity in the future.

"It was a big step forward for this team this year and I think we're only going to get better," Dvorak said.
