After allowing the first goal, yet again, the Flyers were in great position after a strong second period. Taking a two-goal lead to the third, it appeared the Flyers were in place to secure a regulation win against a divisional opponent.

More mistakes in the third period proved costly, and eventually cost the Flyers a point. The Rangers scored twice to tie the game and force overtime, eventually handing the Flyers a shootout loss, 5-4, on Saturday afternoon.

After a fairly even first period, the Rangers took the lead in the final minute. Artemi Panarin capitalized off a face-off to make it 1-0 with 35.6 seconds remaining in the period for his 12th of the season.

Through 20 minutes, shots were 12-8 Flyers.

The Flyers tied the game on the power play in the second. Travis Sanheim took a feed from Denver Barkey, making his NHL debut, and scored to tie the game at one at 6:42.

Just 23 seconds later, Barkey set up Owen Tippett for his 10th goal of the season to give the Flyers a 2-1 lead.

At 10:18, the Flyers power play struck again. Trevor Zegras scored right off the opening face-off for his 15th of the season to make it 3-1.

The Rangers got one back at 12:23, as Panarin took advantage of a turnover by Tippett. The Flyers answered back moments later on a Rangers power play for their first shorthanded goal of the season. Rodrigo Abols cashed in for his second goal of the season to make it 4-2 at 14:36.

Through two periods, shots were 23-16 Flyers.

The Rangers cut the lead to one at 9:13 of the third. Vincent Trocheck had his initial shot stopped, but the rebound deflected off the skate of Nikita Grebenkin and through Sam Ersson to make it 4-3.

The Rangers tied the game with 2:34 remaining in the third with a power-play goal of their own. Mika Zibanejad fired a one-timer that beat Ersson and made it a 4-4 game to force overtime.

The Flyers had two 4-on-3 power plays in overtime, but were unable to cash in with 2:50 of man-advantage time. That forced a quick shootout, as Panarin and Trocheck scored while Zegras and Travis Konecny were denied.

Ersson made 23 saves on 27 shots in the loss. Igor Shesterkin made 28 saves on 32 shots in the win.

Barkey and Sanheim had multi-point games for the Flyers. Panarin and Zibanejad had two points each for the Rangers.

The Flyers return home to take on the Vancouver Canucks on Monday night at 7:30 p.m.
