Flyers Acquire G Woll, D Benoit from Toronto for Ersson, Andrae
The Stanley Cup was awarded less than 48 hours ago, and Philadelphia Flyers’ GM Danny Briere is already hard at work on offseason plans.
A trade has been made that addresses one of the key issues facing the Flyers ahead of next season.
The Flyers have acquired goaltender Joseph Woll and defenseman Simon Benoit from the Toronto Maple Leafs for goaltender Sam Ersson, defenseman Emil Andrae, and a 2026 third-round pick.
Woll, 27, was a third-round pick of the Leafs in the 2016 NHL Draft. In 117 career NHL games, Woll is 63-43-9 with a 2.94 GAA and .906 save percentage. In the 2025-26 season, he was 15-16-7 with a 3.34 GAA and .899 save percentage. The 6-foot-3, 212-pound goaltender will now likely slot in behind Dan Vladar as the Flyers’ backup.
Woll is under contract for two more seasons with a $3.66 million AAV.
Benoit, also 27, was an undrafted free agent who has spent time with both the Anaheim Ducks and the Leafs. In 352 career NHL games, Benoit has six goals and 30 assists for 36 points. The 6-foot-4, 210-pound defenseman adds more size to the blue line, and plays a physical and defensive style.
Benoit has one year remaining on his contract with a 1.35 million cap hit.
Ersson appeared in 143 games with the Flyers, posting a 65-50-17 record with a 3.01 GAA and .884 save percentage. Andrae appeared in 107 games with the Flyers and had three goals and 20 points. Both players were restricted free agents this offseason.
By also moving a third-round pick in the deal, the Flyers have just four selections in the 2026 NHL Draft. Their first-round pick is 21st overall. They also have selections in the second, sixth, and seventh rounds.
