World Juniors 2026: Berglund Wins Gold; Martone, Luchanko Win Bronze
For the first time in 14 years, World Junior gold belongs to Sweden, and a Flyers prospect was at the center of it all. Jack Berglund, the Flyers’ second-round pick in 2024, captained Sweden to a 4-2 victory over Czechia, picking up two assists in the game.
Berglund finished the tournament with three goals and 10 points in seven games. He also had the tying goal in the shootout in the semi-final, extending the shootout to sudden death where Sweden claimed the victory over Finland.
Berglund was not the only Flyers prospect to take home a medal. After Finland’s loss to Sweden and Canada’s loss to Czechia on Sunday, two Flyers prospects were guaranteed bronze. Canada defeated Finland, 6-3, in the bronze medal game. Porter Martone scored the eventual game-winning goal. He finished as the leading goal scorer in the tournament with six goals, and had nine points in seven games.
Jett Luchanko also won bronze with Canada, finishing with one assist in seven games.
For Finland, 2025 fifth-round pick Max Westergard had one goal and four points in seven games. Heikki Ruohonen, a 2024 fourth-round pick, scored a goal and added an assist for Finland against Canada, giving him three goals and nine points in seven games.
So, what’s next for these prospects?
Berglund heads back to Sweden to play in the SHL for Färjestad BK. He has three goals and five points in 22 games.
Martone returns to Michigan State to resume his freshman season. Martone has 11 goals and 20 points in 16 games.
Luchanko goes back to the OHL and the Brantford Bulldogs. In six games since being traded from the Guelph Storm, Luchanko has two goals and eight points.
Ruohonen is also bound for the NCAA again, returning to Harvard. In 11 games, Ruohonen has one goal and five points.
Westergard also returns to the SHL with Frölunda HC. He has no points in 15 games.
Shane Vansaghi of Team USA, eliminated in the quarterfinals, also returns to Michigan State alongside Martone. Vansaghi has one goal and six points in 16 games this season.
