With the Philadelphia Eagles dealing with some injury issues on the interior of their offensive line, the team is signing veteran offensive lineman Nick Gates, who has 29 starts in 44 games over his first five seasons in the NFL.

The 6-foot-5, 306-pound Gates made 10 starts for the Washington Commanders last season and has 39 starts in five NFL seasons playing primary at both center and guard.

Gates entered the league with the New York Giants as an undrafted free agent out of Nebraska in 2018.

After not playing as a rookie due to injury, Gates three games with the Giants in 2019 and started all 16 games for the team in 2020, getting a two-year, $6.825 million contract extension and being named a team captain for the 2021 season where he started two games before an injury ended his season.

Washington would sign Gates after the 2022 season, and he started 10 games for the Commanders last season.

Gates joins a Eagles offensive line room that has seen some changes this offseason, including having to replace longtime center Jason Kelce and now also need a new right guard with 2023 starter Cam Jurgens moving over to center.

Depending on how the line shakes out, Gates could have an impact at either guard or center as a key depth piece.

Guard remains a position of need for the Eagles, with Tyler Steen down with an injury, former first-round pick Makhi Becton getting reps at the right guard position.
