Tuomaala Scores in OT as Flyers Win Rookie Series Finale
Even with their rookie sensation in the lineup, the Flyers were not able to take Friday's opener of the Rookie Series against the New York Rangers as things turned to 3-on-3 in overtime, eventually falling in a shootout.
On Saturday, overtime lasted just 33 seconds before three of the rookie camp standouts teamed up to end the game.
Samu Tuomaala got the pay-off, scoring the overtime winner off a nice feed from Emil Andrae in a 3-2 victory.
The Flyers got the scoring started early in the first on the power play, as Matteo Mann fired a shot from the slot to make it 1-0.
The lead was extended early in the second with Sawyer Boulton getting the goal. Boulton capped off a rush on a great feed by Zayde Wisdom through the slot.
The Rangers responded, scoring a power-play goal by Matthew Robertson through a screen and a shorthanded breakaway goal by Adam Edstrom to even the score at two.
After a scoreless third period, the Flyers needed just 33 seconds to end the game in overtime. Jett Luchanko led a rush up ice and got the puck behind the Rangers net. Luchanko set up Andrae in the slot, and Andrae showed patience to find a wide-open Tuomaala on the doorstep for the game-winning goal.
Carson Bjarnason got the start in goal for the Flyers and stopped all 14 shots faced in the first period. Sam Hillebrandt finished the game, making 22 saves on 24 shots in the win.
The Flyers have three more days of rookie camp practices before things shift to main training camp, scheduled to open on-ice activity on Thursday, Sept. 19.
