Big injury updates shake up Eagles versus Rams Sunday matchup
For the second straight week, the Philadelphia Eagles will play an opponent they faced on their run to win Super Bowl 59.
Of the four teams the Eagles played during the NFL Playoffs last season, the one team that gave them the toughest test was the Los Angeles Rams. Clutch performances by Saquon Barkley and Jalen Carter helped Philadelphia defeat the Rams in the snow back in January.
Eight months later, the two teams will be back on the field at Lincoln Financial Field in a clash of teams with championship expectations for the 2025 NFL season.
Eagles Healthier Than Rams Ahead of Matchup This Sunday
Philadelphia got some good news this week with the return of Dallas Goedert to practice this week. The 30-year-old Tight End was dealing with a Knee Injury that kept him off the practice field ahead of NFL Week Two. But he was a Limited Participant at Eagles practices on Wednesday and Thursday but a Full Participant on Friday.
While Goedert is good to go for Sunday, there were still two players ruled out for Sunday's game versus the Rams: Quarterback Tanner McKee and Running Back Will Shipley.
In line to be the Eagles Backup Quarterback heading into the 2025 season, McKee suffered a Right Thumb Injury during Training Camp and has kept him from practicing regular for a few weeks. That is why Philadelphia traded for Sam Howell before the start of the season to make sure they had an experienced backup Quarterback on the roster while McKee recovered.
Running Back Will Shipley returned to practice in a Limited Capacity this week after reports stated he sustained a Broken Rib. While the Eagles' Official Injury Report continues to refer to Shipley's injury as an "Oblique" issue, Eagles Reporters continue to maintain that the 23-year-old is dealing with a Rib Issue.
Philadelphia acquired Tank Bigsby last week because of Shipley's Injury, so there is no rush to get the Running Back from Clemson back on the field. The Eagles with Bigsby and AJ Dillon have good depth behind superstar Saquon Barkley.
Rams Will Be Shorthanded for Sunday's game versus Eagles
The Rams had two of their starters who did not practice on Wednesday and Thursday. Left Guard Steve Avila is dealing with an Ankle Injury, and Defensive Lineman Braden Fiske has an Oblique Strain.
Avilia has started 27 games for the Rams from 2023-24 but injuries have kept him off the field over the last two seasons. The 25-year-old Guard was the 36th overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft after playing College Football at TCU. He is listed as Doubtful to play this Sunday at Philadelphia.
Fiske is one of the best young defensive linemen in the NFL and a key member of the Rams defense. A Limited Participant at Friday's practice, he is Questionable to play on Sunday in Philadelphia.
Without the 25-year-old defensive force of nature, the Rams would have to learn heavily on Kolbe Turner and Poona Ford to step up their game to fill the void of not having Fiske on the field.
The Rams are already without their Cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon who sustained a Broken Clavicle in last Sunday's game versus the Titans. The Veteran has started 24 games over the last 3 seasons, and now Los Angeles will be without him against an Eagles offense with one of the best Wide Receiver duos in the NFL.
