Grayson’s Grades: Eagles defeat Giants in Philadelphia
PHILADELPHIA - The Philadelphia Eagles played their most complete game of the season and dominated the New York Giants 38-20. The offense found success both on the ground and through the air with two Running Backs rushing for more than 100 yards. Jalen Hurts continued to pass the ball well tossing four touchdown passes in the victory.
Meanwhile, the defense had success rushing the passer sacking Giants Quarterback Jaxson Dart five times. Five different players got to him to record those five sacks.
The Eagles appear to be figuring some things out and head into their bye week with some momentum. It was their bye week last year that the team started to find its identity, and propelled that into a Super Bowl title. Head Coach Nick Sirianni is 4-0 after the bye week in the regular season and will look to keep that trend going when we see the Eagles again on November 10th at the Green Bay Packers.
The Eagles sit alone atop the NFC East with a 6-2 record. Here is the latest edition of Grayson's Grades:
A
Offensive Line - The offensive line had its best game of the season. They worked well as a unit opening holes for the rushing attack to have its best day. They also pass protected well. It has allowed this offense to build some solid momentum heading into the bye. The offensive line will continue to get healthier. Landon Dickerson has been banged up. Cam Jergens missed the last game due to injury. I expect this line to continue trending in the right direction heading into the second half of the season.
Saquon Barkley - Barkley finally broke through and looked like the running back we saw last season. He took the holes the offensive line opened and broke through for some great yardage. Barkley set the tone early with a 65 yard touchdown run in the first quarter. He finished the game with 14 carries for 150 yards and a touchdown. He also caught four passes for 24 yards and another touchdown. There was a moment of concern when he finished a long run down the sideline and winced in pain. Barkley went to the injury tent and was reported to have a sore groin. The bye week comes at a good time for him to allow that to heal before entering the second half of the season.
Tank Bigsby - Bigsby has clearly emerged as the backup running back behind Barkley. He did a great job of taking the holes he had from the offensive line and turning them into some big gains. Bigsby provided a nice spark and even converted a first down on a second and 31. He carried the ball nine times for 104 yards.
Jalen Hurts - Hurts has put together two great weeks which helped lead this team to two solid victories. Over the last two weeks he has passed for more than 500 yards and seven touchdowns with zero interceptions combined. Hurts threw four touchdown passes against the Giants while missing his top receiving target in AJ Brown due to injury. Hurts completed 15 of 20 passes for 179 yards and four touchdowns. He also carried the ball four times for 22 yards.
Dallas Goedert - Goedert caught two touchdown passes in this game. He is such a reliable target and creates great mismatches when running routes. Those two touchdowns have helped set a new career high for touchdown receptions in a season for Goedert. He now has seven touchdowns this year. Staying healthy has been an issue in the past for Goedert. So far so good on that front.
DeVonta Smith - Smith played the role of a number one receiver with AJ Brown out due to a sore hamstring. He ran great routes and proved to once again be a reliable target for Jalen Hurts. Smith caught six passes for 84 yards.
Zack Baun - Baun was flying around and making some good plays. He even had one of the five sacks by the Eagles in this one. Baun led the team with six tackles, one sack, two tackles for a loss, two passes defended and one quarterback hit.
Jalen Carter - Carter played one of his best games of the season. He missed the first meeting due to injury and the Eagles clearly missed him. Carter is the catalyst for success on this defense. What he does attracts extra attention and allows others on that defense to make plays. He appeared to be as healthy as he has been in a while and should be even healthier on the other side of this bye. Carter finished the game with two tackles, one sack, one tackle for a loss and one quarterback hit.
Vic Fangio - Fangio did a great job adjusting to some of the things the Giants did in the first meeting to help find success in this game. Giants Quarterback Jaxson Dart seemed to crush the Eagles defense with his legs. He got out of the pocket and made a lot of things happen. This time, the Eagles did a good job of containing him and preventing any big runs. It also helped trap Dart and lead to five sacks by five different players. Fangio appears to be getting a beat on the pieces he has on this defense and I am eager to see how this defense evolves moving forward after the bye.
Kevin Patullo - Patullo has been heavily criticized for the disjointed and uncomplicated offense that has been run at times. Clearly he has been working that problem and had a great balanced attack on display in this win. The Eagles racked up 427 total yards and 38 points. This team has been missing the rushing attack that propelled it to a Super Bowl title last year. It was a 65 yard touchdown run early in the game that set the tone. Jalen Hurts looked good passing it too tossing four touchdown passes in the victory.
Nick Sirianni - Sirianni's team was out-hustled, outplayed, and out-coached in the first meeting with he Giants 17 days before this one. They got crushed 34-17. He definitely made sure his team did not come out flat in this game. To his credit, the Eagles played with fire, energy and passion and clearly wanted the win.
Will Shipley - Shipley earned this grade for his role as a kick returner. He did a good job of helping to set the offense up with some good field position returning three kicks for a total of 99 yards. The kick return game has been lacking with multiple muffs leading to awful starting field position for the offense. His longest return went for 41 yards.
B
Kelee Ringo - Ringo has struggled at times in coverage but did a much better job in this game. He was helped by a better pass rush forcing Jaxson Dart to move around and not be able to plant and fire downfield. Ringo had two tackles in this game.
Quinyon Mitchell - Mitchell continues to do a good job in coverage. He blankets receivers well and always seems to do a great job of using his hands to create havoc at the time when the ball arrives. He has earned the ability to work on an island and allow the rest of the defense manage the rest of the field. Mitchell had one pass successfully defended in this game.
