The Philadelphia 76ers announced today that the team has picked up the option on head coach Doug Collins’ contract for the 2013-14 season. Collins was named the 23rd head coach in franchise history on May 21, 2010 and has led the Sixers to the playoffs in each of his two seasons.

“Doug Collins has repeatedly proven that he is one of the best head coaches in the NBA and we consider ourselves very fortunate to have him here in Philadelphia,” said Sixers Managing Owner Josh Harris. “We look forward to Doug’s continued leadership, passion and dedication to this organization and our fans, and know that he will work tirelessly in order to put our team in the best position to succeed every time they step on the court.”

In 10 seasons as a head coach for Chicago, Detroit, Washington and Philadelphia, Collins has compiled a mark of 408-359 (.532).  He has coached his team to the playoffs in seven of those 10 seasons.

The Sixers went 27-55 in the season before Collins took over.  He improved the team’s win total by 14 games in his first season in 2010-11 and finished second in voting for the NBA’s Coach of the Year award.  The 14-game improvement marked the third-best from one season to another in franchise history.

This past season, Collins led the Sixer to a record of 35-31, marking the Sixers first winning season since going 43-39 in 2004-05.  The Sixers defeated Chicago 4-2 in the First Round of the playoffs, becoming just the fifth #8 seed to knock off a #1 seed in NBA history.  It also marked the first time the Sixers advanced to the second round of the playoffs since 2003.
