Sixers Select Tyrese Maxey with 21st Overall Pick
The Sixers have made their first selection of draft night 2020. With the 21st overall pick the team has selected Kentucky guard Tyrese Maxey.
Overall this is a good pick by the Sixers. They now have a combo guard in Maxey who could be a scoring off the bench on day one. In his freshman season at Kentucky Maxey averaged 14 PPG and 3.2 APG.
With the departure of Alec Burks, the Sixers are going to need a guard who can come in and score the ball. Maxey is the kind of player that can come in and fill those shoes. He has multiple weapons in his offensive arsenal, and is an athletic finisher at the rim.
Maxey also has good size for the guard position. Standing at six foot three with a six foot six wingspan he should have no issues defending opposing NBA guards.
Along with what he could bring for the Sixers off the bench, Maxey also meshes with the Sixers' starters. If Doc Rivers plans to continue to explore Ben Simmons' game as a point forward, Maxey will be a fine option to be the secondary ball-handler on the floor. He also operates well in the pick-and-roll, and steps into three-point shots better than his college numbers suggest.
Addressing shot creation and perimeter play is something the Sixers needed to do this offseason, and this move does just that. Maxey's game most checks boxes for what the Sixers need moving forward. Worst case scenario, the Sixers have found their sixth man of the future in Tyrese Maxey. Great value with the 21st overall pick.
