Phillies Sign Marlon Byrd

Mike and Todd talk about the news that came out today in the Phillies making their first move in free agency: signing Marlon Byrd. The 36-year old OF turned into a journeyman of sorts after being originally drafted by the Phillies several years ago. Byrd was on the Mets and Pirates last year and had a career year hitting .291 with 24 home runs and 88 RBI. Both Mike and Todd dont understand the move in signing an aging older OF hoping he regains his form when there is already a lot of wear and tear on these type players.

Jerry Crasnick

ESPN.com MLB insider Jerry Crasnick called in LIVE from Orlando, FL the site of the GM meetings this year. Crasnick talks about the acquisition of Byrd by the Phillies today in saying that Byrd is an aging OF in which you hope regains his form from years ago. Crasnick also talks about the possible signing of AJ Pierzynski, another aging player as their new catcher because it looks as if Carlos Ruiz could be on his way out to Colorado. Crasnick said that the signing of Byrd remains 'less than overwhelming' in the writer's eyes at the meetings. Follow Crasnick on Twitter.

Kevin Cooney

Bucks County Courier Times Phillies beat writer Kevin Cooney called in with his reaction on the Byrd signing. Cooney thinks that the acquisition of Byrd has to mean that the Phillies have a bigger move coming. By signing Byrd, is Ruben Amaro looking to trade Domonic Brown? Who knows. The confusing part of Byrd is that he's 36 years old and youre going to pay him $8M when your lineup is filled with older, overpaid players. The Phillies are at the point where the organization has to realize that this core is old and the run is over. Follow Cooney on Twitter.

Jimmy Kempski

Philly.com covering the Eagles calls in every Tuesday at 4:05 to talk Eagles football. The Eagles made an interesting signing today in Brad Smith formerly of the Jets and the Bills as a return man type specialist. Smith can be a KR or PR for the Eagles as they seem reluctant to have DeSean Jackson back there returning kicks. Last season Smith had just 18 kick returns, but had a high 27.5 average per return. On Nick Foles: Kempski thinks he's clearly the guy in 2013, but the jury is still out for next year. Follow Kempski on Twitter.
