Tyrese Maxey set to reach rare 76ers statistical milestone
Only three players in Philadelphia 76ers history have connected on 600 3-pointers in a Sixers uniform: Allen Iverson, Robert Covington and Kyle Korver. But, that list is about to expand to four, as Tyrese Maxey is set to join the club.
Maxey currently sits just three made 3s short of 600 for his career, so he's likely to hit that mark the next time he steps out on the floor. Maybe it will take two games at most, if he has a rough shooting night (He's averaging 3.1 made triples per performance).
The fifth-year guard is attempting a career-high 9.1 shots from beyond the arc per game on the season. His attempt average has increased every single year that he's been in the league.
Unfortunately, his efficiency has dipped in relation to previous campaigns, as he's converting his shots from long distance at just a 33 percent clip, compared to 37 percent last year and 43 percent the season before. Some of that regression is likely due to the extended absence of Joel Embiid, who draws so much defensive attention that he opens things up for everyone else on the floor.
Iverson is the current franchise leader in made 3s with 885. As long as Maxey remains healthy and remains with the Sixers, he will pass that mark in that not-too-distant future. It won't be this season, but it could potentially happen next season.
Meanwhile, Maxey needs just 65 treys to pass Korver and move into the top three in franchise history. That will happen at some point this season, in all likelihood.
Maxey's development as a shooter over the course of his career has been impressive, especially since there were concerns about his ability to consistently space the floor coming out of college. He's put in some serious work to become a legitimate deep threat, and that work has clearly paid off. He's already one of the most productive long-distance shooters in franchise history, and it feels like he's only just gotten started.
