Another South Jersey product is staying in state, as Vineland football star Tyreem Powell has chosen Rutgers.

Powell, who played safety and quarterback for the Fighting Clan, projects to be a defensive end at the collegiate level.

He chooses Rutgers after originally making a verbal commitment to Virginia Tech.  Powell also received an offer fro Penn State, but made the decision to head to Rutgers after Greg Schiano was brought back on board along with assistant Fran Brown.

Powell joins a plethora of former CAL standouts, including a pair of former Vineland teammates, running back Isaih Pacheco and linebacker Nihym Anderson, who are now at Rutgers.

Cedar Creek standout Malachi Melton also flipped to Rutgers this week, after previously committing to Purdue, joining his brother Bo and former Pirates teammate Owen Bowles.

Rutgers opens the 2020 season facing Monmouth on Sept. 5 at SHI Stadium.
