Draft day last year was when Daryl Morey made his mark in Philadelphia. With an array of moves that included trading Al Horford and drafting Tyrese Maxey, Morey completely revamped the roster overnight.

We are still hours away from this year's draft kicking off, and Morey is already at work. It was just reported that the Sixers acquired the 53rd pick in tonight's draft from the Pelicans in exchange for cash considerations. Shams Charania of The Athletic reported that the Sixers sent two million dollars to New Orleans for the pick.

The Sixers now have three picks at their disposal leading into the draft. Their first selection comes in at pick 28, followed by picks 50 and 53 in round two.

Landing the extra pick gives the Sixers more optionality and assets in their arsenal for later discussions. This is likely the first of multiple moves Morey makes by the conclusion of the draft. That additional pick could help the Sixers acquire a veteran player, or the two second-round picks can be packaged in an attempt to move into the first round.

Selecting someone with either of those second-round picks is something that could also be in play. There were reports of the Sixers holding workouts for players that might be available when they pick in the 50's. Among the prospects reported to have a pre-draft workout is Iowa big man Luka Garza.

Morey is not going to sit on his hands tonight. Whether it's a small trade to upgrade the roster or a big splash like moving Ben Simmons, he will be active in trade talks. It is going to be tough to follow up the home run he had on draft night last year, but Morey should be up for the challenge.
