The Five NFC teams most capable of ending the Eagles season
Coming off their Bye Week, the Philadelphia Eagles are tied for the most wins in their Conference and have a commanding lead in the NFC East. They are one of only 5 NFC Teams with a 3-1 record at home this season.
Philadelphia has on their schedule five teams with a winning record in the final nine games of the 2025 regular season. The combination of being healthier and adding three new players put the Eagles in the position to start playing their best football for the next two months heading into the NFL Playoffs.
Thanks to The Sports Bash with Mike Gill's poll question of the day for Wednesday's Show, I wanted to take a closer look at the top contenders to unseat the Eagles the best team in the Conference. Which teams are in the best position to prevent Philadelphia from returning to the Super Bowl for the second straight year.
The Top Five NFC Threats to the Philadelphia Eagles in 2025
We sorted these teams based on their win-loss record after NFL Week Nine and rate each team on a 1-5 scale based on how much of a problem that team would be in a win-or-go-home playoff matchup:
*Los Angeles Rams (6-2)
One of the best team's in the NFC, the Rams have the offensive firepower and defensive pass rush to be a difficult matchup for any team they play.
Quarterback Matthew Stafford leads the NFL in Passing Touchdowns (21), as part of an offense that is averaging 26.1 Points per Game (8th best in the NFL). The Rams' Defense is the second-best scoring defense in the league, allowing just 15.9 PPGA, and they have two players tied for the second-most QB Hits (17) in the NFL (Jared Verse and Byron Young).
But the Rams have a big dark cloud hanging over them: Head Coach Sean McVay is 1-6 all-time versus Philadelphia, and a combined 0-4 versus Eagles HC Nick Sirianni in the regular season plus postseason. Defensive Coordinators like Vic Fangio and Jim Schwartz have been difficult matchups for McVay's offenses over the years.
While the Rams are a difficult matchup for any NFL team, their two losses this season (Eagles in NFL Week 3, and the 49ers in NFL Week 5) showed that this team struggles against unorthodox offenses, and really good defensive front sevens.
Worry Scale: 3.5
*Seattle Seahawks (6-2)
Heading into the 2025 season, the Seahawks' projected Over/Under win total at many sportsbooks was set at 8.5 wins. With nine games remaining, Seattle only needs three more wins to exceed many people's expectations.
In his second year as Head Coach, Mike McDonald has taken many of the defensive tactics from when he was the Baltimore Ravens Defensive Coordinator, and elevated the Seahawks into one of the best in 2025. Seattle is top ten in Points Per Game Against (18.8), Rushing Yards Allowed per Attempt (3.5), and Quarterback Pressures.
But where the Seahawks defense has struggled is against Passing Offenses that can take advantage of their secondary. Both of their losses this year were also the games in which they allowed the most passing yards this season.
But Quarterback Sam Darnold is top ten in Passing Yards and Passing Touchdowns for the second straight season, and star Wide Receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba is having a career year. So even if Philadelphia can take advantage of the Seahawks' defense, Philadelphia still faces the challenge of a Seattle offense that is averaging 28.9 Points Per Game.
Worry Scale: 3
*Tampa Bay Buccaneers (6-2)
Despite playing without four of their best offensive weapons for multiple games this season, the Buccaneers have found a way to win six of their first eight games this season. Thanks to their resilient Quarterback Baker Mayfield, Tampa stands on top of the NFC South Division.
But what the Eagles exposed in their first win in Tampa during the Nick Sirianni era was the flaws in the Buccaneers' defense. In past years, Todd Bowles' defenses have given Quarterback Jalen Hurts issues, but this season the Eagles scored 31 points against them.
If the Buccaneers can get healthy, they are a major threat to everyone in the NFL Playoffs. Mayfield has eight touchdown passes in his last three playoff games, and Tampa has lost their last two playoff games by a total of ten combined points.
Worry Scale: 4
*Green Bay Packers (5-2-1)
Before the Green Bay Packers acquired All-Pro Pass Rusher Micah Parsons, they were already considered NFC Postseason contenders after winning 20 regular-season games over the last two years. This season, Green Bay Defense has allowed the fifth-fewest Total Yards in the NFL.
But the Packers' issue this year has been an offense that has played erratically. In Green Bay's five wins this season, they are averaging 28.6 Points Per Game, but in their two losses, just 11.5 PPG. Green Bay Head Coach Matt LaFleur is 0-3 versus the Eagles during the Nick Sirianni era and overall, the Packers are 1-4 versus Philadelphia in LaFleur's seven seasons as Green Bay's Head Coach.
The season-ending injury to Tight End Tucker Kraft is a huge blow for the Packers moving forward. Without a real number one receiving target for Quarterback Jordan Love, the Green Bay offense becomes overly dependent on Running Back Josh Jacobs to be their playmaker.
Worry Scale: 3.5
*Detroit Lions (5-3)
The 2025 NFL season was the first time Head Coach Dan Campbell has dealt with the transition to new coordinators since 2022. After the Lions got dominated by the Green Bay Packers in Week One, Detroit's offense is averaging 32.3 Points Per Game.
But the injuries on defense may be what hold this team back in the long run, not their Defensive Coordinator, Kelvin Sheppard. The 2025 Lions defense has allowed 30 more points through the first 8 games (178) compared to the 2024 team through their first 8 games (148).
The real threat for the Eagles when they play the Detroit Lions is the running attack. Philadelphia is bottom ten in the NFL in multiple Rushing Defensive Categories, and the 2025 Eagles defense has allowed 120 Rush Yards or more to opponents in five of their eight games this year.
The Lions have the third-most Rushing Touchdowns in the NFL this season (11), and their duo of Jahmyr Gibbs plus David Montgomery is one of the best Running Back tandems in the league. This makes it easier for Quarterback Jared Goff to execute at a high level; the 31 year old QB has the second-best Pass Completion Percentage in the NFL (73.8%), and third-most Passing Touchdowns (17).
Worry Scale: 4
So to review, my ranking of the Top Five NFC Contenders that should "worry" Eagles' fans the most:
1. Detroit Lions
2. Tampa Bay Buccaneers
3. Los Angeles Rams
4. Green Bay Packers
5. Seattle Seahawks
