I couldn’t help but feel bad for Cedar Creek High School graduate Bo Melton. He switched to cornerback before the season, only to go back to wide receiver Monday night. Melton dropped a key, fourth-down pass that would have kept a drive alive, then made a mistake on punt coverage that resulted in a touchback instead of a possible safety for Green Bay.
Three stars
- Eagles linebacker Jaelan Phillips (6 tackles, 2 QB pressures, 1 TFL and 1 fumble recovery in Eagles debut).
- Packers linebacker Edgerrin Cooper (6 tackles, 1 forced fumble).
- Eagles linebacker Jalyx Hunt (5 tackles, 1 sack, 2 TFL).
Eagles’ best play
The Eagles defense enjoyed an impressive performance that included a key moment when linebacker Nakobe Dean pried the ball loose from Packers quarterback Jordan Love and recovered the ensuing fumble to end a scoring threat just before halftime.
Eagles’ worst play
The Packers defense also played very well. It ruined the Eagles’ opening drive when Cooper punched the ball away from Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts and cornerback Keisean Nixon recovered the fumble.
Turning point
The Eagles led 3-0 early in the fourth quarter when the Packers punted on fourth-and-11 from the Eagles’ 40-yard line. Packers punter Daniel Whelan’s kick was rolling toward the end zone. Packers gunner Bo Melton swatted the ball back to the 1-yard line, then Eagles returner Xavier Gipson tried to field it and was tackled in the end zone, but officials ruled that Melton’s foot had touched the goal line, resulting in a touchback. The Eagles went on to score their only TD on the ensuing drive.
Did you notice?
At age 37 years and 221 days, defensive end Brandon Graham became the team’s oldest defensive player to appear in a regular-season or playoff game in the Super Bowl Era. Graham was the second-oldest Eagle overall to play in a game since former tackle Jason Peters (38 years, 319 days) at Green Bay in 2020.
The Packers’ 7 points was their lowest output at Lambeau Field since they were shut out vs. Detroit on December 10, 2018. … Eagles right tackle Lane Johnson was carted to the locker room with an ankle injury in the second quarter, but he returned to the game in the fourth. … Eagles guard Landon Dickerson appeared to jump early on the team’s only “Tush Push,” but no penalty was called. … Eagles running back Saquon Barkley was held to 60 yards on 22 carries, but had a 41-yard reception. … Bo Melton caught two passes for 28 yards for the Packers.
