Why an NBA Insider Believes in the 76ers New Leadership
The Philadelphia 76ers enter the offseason with the most intrigue and questions that have surrounded this franchise in six years, with changes to the Front Office, and unique challenges to retool the roster.
In the aftermath of the New York Knicks winning the 2026 NBA Championship, there has not been a back-to-back NBA Championship team since 2018. Which means that there is no clear "favorite" to win next season.
The landscape of the NBA this offseason makes the Sixers' naming new men in charge of their front office an interest first step into recalibrating the team to have a chance to be real contenders in the 2026-27 season.
NBA Insider Has Praise For 76ers' New Executive Leadership
We are only a couple of weeks removed from the hiring of former Cleveland Cavaliers General Manager Mike Gansey to be the replacement for Daryl Morey as Sixers President of Basketball Operations. Many 76ers fans are happy to see Morey is no longer the man in charge of the organization, but they are also cautiously optimistic about Gansey.
NBA Insider Brandon "Scoop B" Robinson joined Josh Hennig on 973 ESPN Radio South Jersey, and gave a glowing review for the 76ers hiring of Gansey along with the promotion of Jameer Nelson to the role of EVP of Basketball Operations:
"The Mike Gansey hiring was ingenious because he is a respected basketball mind - (And) he left (Cleveland) highly recommended (before) coming to Philadelphia. And it's interesting because when I look at Philly, the (promotion) of Jameer Nelson...You're seeing a lot of young people in the league taking their rightful place for the next 15 to 20 years. - I know that role in Philadelphia, it's going to take some work (this offseason) but I also know that Mike Gansey spent some time under the 2016 Cavs front office, and they did some great work over there."
Gansey worked his way up the Cavaliers organization starting in 2011, and earned numerous promotions along with way before being named Cavs General Manager in 2022. Nelson is one of the greatest players in Saint Joseph's University Basketball history, he played in the NBA for 14 seasons. He served as Delaware Blue Coats GM from 2020-2025 before his promotion to Assistant Sixers GM.
"Scoop B" Robinson says the new Sixers Front Office leadership reminds him of how Presidents and Governors bring into their administration people who were also "finalists" for the positions they were elected to:
"It kind of reminds me of politics - You want to have people who know the job, who know it more than you, but can help guide you, and you can learn from each other....Before the hiring of Gansey and (the promotion of) Nelson, I knew that those two were finalists. - Jameer Nelson did a wonderful job in his post as the General Manager of the Delaware Blue Coats in the G-League. His connection to Chester (in Pennsylvania), the connection to (having played at) St. Joe's, having played against Allen Iverson, (being) relatable to today's player, but also having appeared in the NBA Finals as a member of the Orlando Magic...he knows the game of basketball."
The 76ers new front office leadership has the challenge of "keeping up" with what many anticipate to be a wild NBA Offseason with trades and free agent movement.
