Report: Vikings Request to Interview Eagles’ Jonathan Gannon for HC opening
The Denver Broncos were the first team to put in a request to interview Philadelphia Eagles defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon for their vacant head coaching job and now another team has interest in the teams defensive play-caller.
The Minnesota Vikings.
The Vikings fired head coach Mike Zimmer following a 8-9 finish to the season.
Gannon, 39, now has two teams interested in him, as he prepares for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday in the Wild Card round of the playoffs.
"I can confirm that," Gannon said this week. "But my sole focus is on Tampa Bay."
The Eagles’ defensive coordinator joined Philadelphia after serving as the Indianapolis Colts defensive backs coach for three years and was in Minnesota as an assistant defensive backs coach from 2014-17 on Zimmer's staff.
Philadelphia's defense has seen improvement under Gannon, finishing 10th (22.6) in opposing points per game after being 20th (26.1) last season. Gannon has had the Eagles ranked 10th in total yards per game (328.8), including ninth best against the run (107.9) and 11th best against the pass (220.9) in 2021.
Gannon first entered the league in 2007 as defensive quality control coach with the Atlanta Falcons. He held the same title with the Tennessee Titans (2012-13). From there he went on to coach defensive backs with Minnesota for three seasons and three more years for the Colts before landing in Philadelphia as a coordinator.
His next move could be to become a head coach.
